Most folks that have been gamers for a long time remember the good old days using console games, cartridge games, computer games, and now online gaming. And every step of the way the technology has increased and gotten better. I doubt there are many people who would disagree with me when I tell them that in the future there will be no gaming control devices, and that the participants and gamers will use their mind and body to control their avatar within the game.

Better yet much of it will be augmented reality mixed with Virtual Reality. The lines between what is real and what is the game will be blurred. The future gaming experience will be much like the human life experience, and it would be wise not to mix them up for those who are playing for hours on end. If you are a doubter of what I'm saying, then I'd like to enlighten you as to this future, and where I see things going.

There was an interesting article recently in LiveScience Online News titled; Microsoft Sees Human Body as an Antenna" written by Leslie Meredith, TechNewsDaily Senior Writer. The piece showed up on Yahoo News on May 21, 2011. The article stated;

"Microsoft has discovered a home automation system that could eliminate costly rewiring and outsmart even the smartest appliances and the team has shown that the human body is a natural antenna. It reliably picks up the electromagnetic signals that emanate from all electrical systems and appliances in the home. These ambient signals can be used to create an affordable home automation system that controls household electronics with a pat on the wall or even a simple hand gesture."

Yes, now you can see that this reality is happening before your eyes. All of these technologies will be here the next 5 to 10 years. And that's less time between today and the first original games of the past. After all, electronic games have been around for almost 30 years now. And they're getting better and better each year.

Not only are the games getting better but also the simulators which are used by the military, aviation industry, and the training of people operating heavy equipment, trucks, ships, and just about anything that's quite expensive to operate.

Your body is the antenna, your mind is the controller, and you have the wheel. I hope you make the most of it and enjoy your time in virtual reality gaming of the future. Please consider all this and think on it.

Sometimes it seems that many video games, although they have different graphics, tend to have the same feel as you play. There is a very good reason for this, and perhaps, it comes from the human ability to imitate, and copy - it's innate, but does that make it okay? Ah, do I hear more controversy in the gaming community? Surely, I jest. Some rather innovative gaming programmers are miffed as others nix their creative abilities and copy their games. How bad is it, whom does it hurt, and why are such open-source advocates now angry at the borrowing of gaming themes and styles of play?

Indeed there was terrific article not too long ago in the Los Angeles Times titled "Game Developers Fight a Cloning War - Some Creators Feel Cheated By Alleged Idea Theft, But Others Think Cloning Can Be Good for Gaming" by Jamin Brophy-Warren, which was published on April 18, 2011. The article discusses the challenges of proprietary themes and concepts in video, internet, and computer gaming along with the proverbial quote; "Imitation is the highest form of flattery" motif.

Question is; when does outright copying of a computer game idea violate patent laws, or proprietary source? Further, I ask; is it illegal, in poor taste, or just unethical to make such copies, and when genres are copied in the movies, books, literature, and computer games who wins, and who really loses?

If there is a market for games of certain genres, styles, and scenarios then surely gaming programmers will come to the gamer's, and consumer's rescue right? I mean if there is money out there and folks desire certain types of games, you can bet gaming entrepreneurs will fulfill those wants and needs - that's how it works in the market place and the gaming sector and computer game industry is surely no different.

Consider if you will the counter argument to the gaming programmers who get pissed-off that others are basically copying their ideas, and merely changing the graphics. What If - no one was allowed to copy a given genre in literature, novels, or movies? There would be only one Western Movie, one Romance Novel, one Science Fiction Novel with aliens, etc. Would that really be fair to the public, who wants to be entertained with money in hand?

And to that point of contention, what about the Movie "Tron" and its central theme, namely; "power to users" - would the industry really be served if no other companies copied the standard genres or the future sub-genres? After all, people loved the movie Matrix, and that entire branch of Sci Fi mixed with philosophy. Many computer games are now based on similar themes, so they too copied a Movie Genre. Now the computer gamer programmers are angry that folks are copying their style, or various version of play, should they be?

After all the more others copy them, the more gamers buy games in that genre or using those styles, which makes it that much more powerful and therefore, more money for those who produce new games, and more sales for the old ones too, longer shelf life of active sales. See that point? I knew you would.

Are you amongst those people who love playing video games more than anything? More than being in school? Or playing basketball with your friends? Or hanging out with friends? The truth is that everyone loves games whether you are old or young; there is no age limit in whether you can play a particular game or not, right? Gaming has become a source of entertainment for everyone including adults. Let's talk about the pros and cons of gaming, how gaming is beneficial in certain situations and not so much in some.

The Pros of Gaming:

1) Great source of entertainment and Good stress reliever: Mostly all groups of ages are vulnerable to stress; whether it's from working long hours, being in school all day, or encountering stressful situations at home. The most effective way to avoid stress is to stay away from stressful situations and embrace positive views in life. And this can be done by doing what you enjoy to do. 2) Fine socializing gadget: With modern day technologies, what made gaming even more popular now is the fact that people can play games with other random people online. Moreover, by playing with random people and communicating with them allows making new friends and a means of socializing with other people who tend to have the same interest which makes playing a game even more fun. So, in a way gaming is a teenagers or anyone's friend because it entertains there young brains as long as they are playing good games.

The Cons of Gaming:

1) Bridging apart from Real World: some people are so involved in the world of gaming that they can't see through pass that. They lose interest in outdoor activities; lag behind in school as they don't find education and doing homework as much fun as playing video games; like being in home all day to play their games.

2) Damage to Eyesight and increased risk of Obesity: As much amusing and enjoyable gaming is doesn't it make oneself a couch potato? When people love gaming so much and find it so pleasurable they tend to lag behind on other important things. Their life is just limited to that one room in which they can just sit and play games all day, and that's what comforts them and makes them happy. This can become a long term health issue as if you stay home all day in a couch playing games you tend to eat lot of junk food and in lot more quantity compared to going out and playing ball with friends which takes up some energy. Moreover, by sitting all day and being not involved any physical work can also extend the risk of obesity. Furthermore, let's not forget starring at the computer screen or TV for a long period of time playing games is very damaging to eyes and can weaken eyesight in long term.

The bottom line is that everyone should enjoy doing what they love; in this case playing games, but also be proactive and take care of your own health. Play games but for a short period of time and get more involved in outdoor activities and focus on your education as well.

Gaming in Washington DC - Not Just for the President and Congress Anymore

So, you like to play all sorts of video, computer, and online games with your friends. Well then, perhaps you belong to a couple of online gaming communities too. Sure, it's exciting and fun, and in Washington DC they want to recruit you to play online, perhaps even play for a little money too, and if you think you are too old for such things, think again, because the games they are talking about are geared towards serious adults.

In fact, there was a great article recently in the Wall Street Journal by the great writer Alexandra Berzon titled "Nation's Capital Bets Online Poker is Lawful - Washington, D.C.'s Budget Lets Lottery Operate Gambling Website in Challenge to Federal Government's Effective Ban" which was published on April 8, 2011. Apparently, the city council voted approval for the Government's Lottery website to offer online gaming and poker gambling to help shore up the budget, which is rather interesting because currently it is illegal to gamble online in the United States.

Indeed, all this kind of reminds me a little of that silly bumper sticker, the one that reads "Don't Steal, the Government Hates Competition" - and although I am not quite that cynical, I am fascinated by the predicament that this approval has put the Federal Government in. In the above mentioned article the poker players alliance stated that it wouldn't be a viable business anyway, as the pool of poker players around DC is only about 600,000 people, but it could help the budget.

If I were a betting man, well, I'd bet Steve Wynn in Las Vegas is happy to hear about this, as he's just invested in a major online poker website and has been lobbying heavy to get the Nevada Gaming Commission to allow the online gambling in Nevada. It's hard to say if other jurisdictions and lottery commissions will also try such a thing, perhaps budget ridden California might attempt to do the same thing to shore up its budget, as Jerry Brown has now come to town, and he has sworn he will slash the budget and he's not clowning around.

Looks as if Washington DC is all in, and others will soon follow. What was once considered illegal may soon be a way to drive revenue to the poorly funded government coffers at both the state and federal level, and who knows maybe some counties and cities, or perishes might also get in on the action? Time will tell, but if I were a betting man, that's where I'd lay my cards. Please consider all this and think on it.

Board Game Inventing Success Secrets

Ok, if you want to hear that coming up with a successful board game idea that could make you tens of thousands up front and make you a substantial income for a few years is easy, then you have come to the wrong place.

I won't sugar coat the truth that even though it is possible to make a successful board game that could make you rich or well off is possible, unless you have an early success it will probably take you some time.

But...

Since l have been at this for more than a few years, (with one success) l can give you some tips to help increase your chances of an early success.

? Keep trying even when you fail more than 3 times, l failed 7 times before hitting on a successful puzzle idea.

? Develop at least 3 ideas before approaching a toy company in order to increase your changes and make them eager to want to see you again.

? Use coloured pencils to relay your ideas to them, it will carry more weight and give you a better chance than a quick black and white pencil sketch.

? If you develop an idea you are dead set on, develop it as much as possible first. Walking in with a card game, where you can sit down and have a real game with them will substantially increase your chances of a signed contract.

There are many more, but these will give you a head start in this industry.

Also when you develop an idea with a 3D aspect, try using coloured foam sheets which you can get from most craft shops. You can use a glue gun and thin wire as well if moving parts are required. Great for showing an idea you think is a winner and you want to show it in the most complete version possible.

Developing board games with the conventional format, (playing board, cards, dice, etc) will, in my opinion give you the best chance of success. Puzzles come next and toys last.

Why? I hear you ask.

Mainly because of the cost and popularity; board games can make you up to $60,000 per year for a few years.

Puzzles can make you $10,000 to $15,000 over several years, or more if you are lucky.

And toys, which are generally the most expensive to produce are at the bottom of the list, (although some toys have hit the jackpot) profit margins usually reflect puzzle incomes.

So...there you have it, get your thinking caps on, develop a simple board game idea and make serious money!

In the first part of ideas for alternative quizzes we looked at using dice to pick questions and quiz master, Spin the bottle and finally guess the question from the answer. Here is the concluding part to this two part article on quizzes.

Indoor games. Each player has to come with a set of questions with different difficulties (need to number from 1 to the total of players). Here is a simple game that enables you to incorporate this type of quizzes. You pick the first players game and each person plays until they finish or are last. Then the winner is asked what you believe to be the easiest question on the sheet, then the next all the way down until to the most difficult being ask to the last place person. This is a brilliant way of combining quizzes and silly games together.Take a simple classic children's game say ludo, give each player some questions or let them bring their own and get them to mark on whats on the board to each question. With board games that have colors like ludo you can put difficulties level into the questions. Play the game as you would normally but only use one token to move if playing ludo as you'll run out of questions. The player answers the question to what it references on the board game. With the other tokens on a ludo board every time they get a question right they move one of their color tokens to the finish whilst they move around the board. If they get a quiz question wrong they move a token back to their start point. The object of the game if using ludo could be all tokens into the end. Then they can only be allowed to move if they land within ex amount of spaces and if they get the answer to the question they win. Players cannot move their moving token into the finish until all their other tokens are there but once this has happened they don't need to move them back for incorrect answers.

Hopefully with this and the first part to this article you have been given the foundations to making fun quizzes with an extra dimension. Now go and use your imagination what about ironing clothes if a player gets wrong:). The only thing that stops you is your own imagination. Think about chess. One of my friends has Simpsons themed chess pieces. It makes the game more casual, and you can't really be uber-competitive and serious when you are focused on keeping Homer alive. But the game's rules don't change. It's the same exact game. The pieces are moot.

So why do we care about graphics? I think it's how we pick what games we want to play. If I am scrolling through thumbnails on a Flash portal, I'm going to want to play the game that looks the coolest. Or, if I'm looking for chess pieces and I'm a serious player, I definitely wouldn't get Simpsons pieces.

Let's say you have two games; one game will have childish, noob-looking graphics and the other will have clean, stylish Illustrator graphics. If you were playing the childish game, you'd probably be playing the game thinking about how the graphics are weird. That could get in the way of things.

In conclusion, I think graphics are a necessity because other games have them. Having cool-looking art is just another way to one-up your competitors. Essentially, I think it's all relative; in this reality that we make games in, we need to have graphics so people take us seriously (for the most part.) Wouldn't it be cool if there was some parallel universe where games where just circles and squares and different colors to let you know what you're doing?

Maybe that wouldn't be cool. (Note: just so you know, I'm a graphic artist, not a programmer. If graphics weren't important, I would be even less important. I've tried to become a programmer simply because I feel like graphics aren't as important as programming. I hope that someday I'll be able to program... but I'm not even close to that point at this point.)

Anyway, enough of my ranting. My points are probably stupid. I'm bad at this kind of thing. So I want to know what you guys think. Why do we care so much about graphics of games? What if there weren't graphics in games?

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core for PSP

I bought my FFVII Crisis Core copy in Nihonbashi, Osaka about a 2 months ago, but I finally finished it yesterday! I think the story line is great towards the end, but the filler storyline is pretty light. The main character, Zack Fair, starts the game as a second class S.O.L.D.I.E.R working for the Shinra Corporation. When first class Genesis disappears and then starts attacking Shinra, Zach, his mentor Angel, and the legendary Sephiroth have to figure out what's going on. As most of you guys have played FFVII, I don't think I have to tell you the whole storyline and if you haven't played it, go get a copy asap.

I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay because it was change of pace from hardcore, ultra difficult action titles like Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry. You control Zack as you cut down countless numbers of enemies using your sword and materia. Limit breaks make a return as DMV which is like a slot machine. If you get all 3 faces of a particular character, you can perform Zack's limit breaks, level up Zack, gain status effects, and level up your materia. The DMV make Zack pretty much invincible, but at least you feel like you are powerful instead of some weak chump getting beat on by minions (Gaiden anyone?) The camera angles are awesome because you can see yourself and the enemies at all times. I never had any problem escaping attacks because I could see them and the roll button helps your dodge almost anything. Boss battles are intense and satisfying because while they are overpowered and dangerous, you have enough firepower in your arsenal to handle them.

The graphics are top notch. This game didn't need FMV cut scenes even on PSP. I was very impressed by how beautiful everything looked. Some games can't even pull off that level of detail on the PS2 or PS3. The FMV looked just like FFVII: Advent Children. I seriously didn't expect it to look that good on PSP because it is a portable console. Playing pretty games like FFVII confirm that I made a good decision buying a PSP instead of a DS.

The game has flaws though. FFVII characters are very endearing, but you don't get much back story about any character. Many chances to find out more about important characters are squandered. For example, Zack returns to his village once but he doesn't meet his family. We don't find out anything concerning Zack's childhood or how he became a S.O.L.D.I.E.R. Also Sephiroth disappears for about 70% of the game only to return at the end as some raving psycho lunatic. His reasons for losing his marbles barely make any sense in the context of the new characters and story line elements. Furthermore, most of the new characters are flat and don't cut it. I didn't like Genesis rambling every two seconds about the same thing over and over again. The other S.O.L.D.I.E.R.S and characters you interact with using the email system are useless. You don't get anything from interacting with them unlike the U.M.N. email system in the first Xenosaga. Finally, Zack's interactions with Aeris were a disappointment. You barely spend anytime with her and when you do, she has you running around on silly fetch quests that have nothing to do with the storyline or your relationship. I was hoping they would explain more about her past, but I guess they are going to milk FFVII fans with an Aeris game.

The mission system left more to be desired. Square decided to spam canned game environments for almost every mission you do. It is like they wanted you to be bored out of your mind trying to slay monsters for extra items that don't even affect the storyline or gameplay. All of the missions are search and destroy. You never destroy anything cool though. Most of the time you are just destroying overpowered minions. Why couldn't they give me the choice to assassinate some enemy of Shinra in a rival nation or lead a rebel alliance against dirty corporations? Square's lack of choice isn't fair to a gamer like me who is used to playing hits like Fable or KOTOR.
